SUMMARY:Broad Brook Coalition Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Members and friends are cordially invited to attend Broad Brook Coalition’s annual meeting on Sunday\, November 9\, at the Florence Civic Center. This year’s meeting will be in-person only\, with no Zoom link. Light refreshments will be served at the Civic Center starting at 2:00 p.m. Please join us! \n\n\n\nThis year’s speaker is Elizabeth Wroblicka from The Trustees of Reservations\, who will give the keynote address titled Recent Land Conservation Wins in the Connecticut River Watershed. The Trustees just launched a new strategic plan focusing on land conservation\, climate resiliency\, and connecting people to the land.  The July 2025 acquisition of the 260-acre Beaver Brook golf course in Williamsburg and Northampton by The Trustees of Reservations has generated a lot of excitement in the local conservation community.  Elizabeth was the project lead on that acquisition and will give us an overview of the Trustees’ new Beaver Brook Reservation including wildlife habitat\, climate resiliency\, and plans for public recreational access.   In addition to Beaver Brook\, the Trustees are in the process of saving large blocks of forest land throughout the Connecticut River Watershed.  This past April\, Elizabeth also assisted Bob Vollinger in protecting his family farm on N. Farms Road with an agricultural preservation restriction held by Kestrel Land Trust.  Elizabeth is an expert in the tools and techniques that made these projects possible and can answer your questions about how they could be applied to enhance the Fitzgerald Lake Greenway. \nElizabeth Wroblicka is senior land protection specialist for The Trustees of Reservations where she focuses on protecting critical forest and farmland. She formerly practiced law specializing in land conservation\, environmental justice\, real estate\, land use\, estate planning\, and litigation. Elizabeth has worked as a staff member of the Land Trust Alliance\, Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust\, the Napa Valley Land Trust\, and the Pacific Forest Watershed Lands Stewardship Council and served as Chief of Wildlife Lands for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. She currently sits on the board of The Norcross Wildlife Foundation and LTA’s Conservation Defense Advisory Council. Prior board service includes Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture and the Northampton Zoning Board of Appeals and Conservation Commission.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: The Role of Fungi in the Forest Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Join mycologist Peter Russell on a foray to look at the fungi fruiting around Fitzgerald Lake.  We will use the fungi we find to consider the roles they play in the ecosystem\, especially their succession in space and time both on decomposing wood and as mycorrhizal partners with trees.  The main purpose of the foray will not be to consider their edibility or medicinal qualities. Peter is a local resident\, a member of the Pioneer Valley Mycological Society\, and has been leading mushroom forays for many years.

SUMMARY:Work Day Event: Removal of Water Chestnut from Fitzgerald Lake
DESCRIPTION:Several years ago we implemented a new approach to controlling water chestnut in Fitzgerald Lake called "pull early\, pull often." In 2017\, we removed roughly 1\,100 lbs. from the lake while in 2024 the yield was down to 90 lbs. Though we are pleased with the results so far\, water chestnut seeds can remain viable for up to ten years on the lake bottom so we plan to continue our work again this year. We'll organize crews in late May\, begin pulling in mid-June\, and continue at 3-week intervals throughout the summer. Volunteers should bring their own canoes or kayaks. If interested\, contact Tina White by email (broadbrooktreasurer@gmail.com) or phone (413-341-0240) for further information.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: Night Sounds
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk to explore the sounds of the woods and shoreline at night. We’ll be on trails using flashlights (bring your own\, plus extra batteries). We’ll talk about the sounds we hear and also spend several minutes experiencing the dark in silence. To hone our hearing to the sounds of the wild\, we’ll request people to refrain from much talking while we walk. Be prepared for mosquitos and ticks. Adults and children welcome. Molly has been an active participant with the BBC for many years\, leading walks\, advising us on habitat and wildlife issues\, and serving on the Board of Directors. She taught natural history at Greenfield Community College and has a lifelong curiosity and wonder about the natural world.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: What’s Up with Invasive Plants?
DESCRIPTION:Location: Arcanum Field Parking Lot\, Florence (carpool to site) \nManaging invasive plants can at times be. . . well. . . depressing. On this walk led by Tom Annese\, we’ll take a more light-hearted approach to invasive plant management and focus on practical measures to control invasive species and increase biodiversity on forest land. We’ll review the more familiar invasive plant species and examine some invasive species new to Northampton. We’ll discuss how to initially assess a site with invasives\, develop a simple management plan\, and use realistic strategies to contain and suppress them. Whether you’re a grizzled and experienced weed warrior or someone just starting out\, all are welcome. Note: Meet in the Arcanum Field parking lot\, N. Maple St.\, Florence\, where we’ll carpool to private land nearby.  Contact Tom Annese attannese@northamptonma.gov with any questions.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: Vernal Pool Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Location: North Farms Road entrance \nFitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is fortunate to contain several confirmed vernal pools just a short walk in from the North Farms Rd. entrance. Join biologist Brad Timm as we visit these pools and discover their truly unique ecology. We’ll learn about the wide variety of animals that rely on vernal pools for their existence – from amphibians and reptiles to an amazing number of diverse invertebrate species\, as well as some mammals and birds. And we’ll explore the importance of vernal pools to overall ecosystem functioning\, and how climate change might impact these critical habitats. We will also get the chance to see some of these animals in action during our walk while we\nlearn about their captivating life histories. All ages are welcome and encouraged! Brad Timm is a wildlife biologist who has conducted amphibian research (typically centered around vernal pools)in New England for over 15 years.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: The Role of Fungi in the Forest Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Location: North Farms Road entrance \nJoin mycologist Peter Russell on a foray to look at the fungi fruiting around Fitzgerald Lake.

SUMMARY:Bark: Get to Know Your Trees
DESCRIPTION:The traits typically used to describe trees—leaves\, twigs\, and buds—are often hard to see or seasonally absent. Join Michael for an exploration of bark\, which is always visible in any season. As you hone your perceptive abilities you will learn about a system for identifying tree species by their bark\, and discover why such a variety of bark characteristics exist. How does bark form? Why do some species have smooth bark\, while on others it is thick and broken? Why does bark peel? We will explore these and other questions as we examine the various trees along Boggy Meadow Rd.

SUMMARY:BBC Annual Meeting 2023
DESCRIPTION:Members and friends are cordially invited to attend the Broad Brook Coalition’s annual meeting on Sunday\, November 12. Please join us to\ncelebrate BBC’s 35th anniversary! This year’s meeting will be presented in hybrid format: you may attend in-person at the Florence Civic Center or at home via Zoom. Information about how to attend virtually will be sent by email ahead of time. Light refreshments will be served at the Civic Center starting at 2:00 p.m.\, with the program to follow at 2:30. \nThis year’s speaker is Bob Leverett\, who will present the keynote address titled Northampton Woodlands’ Importance to Climate Mitigation. The woodlands of Northampton and the surrounding area offer an abundance of maturing and mature tree cover that helps in climate mitigation. Forest managers often differ in their interpretation of the roles of younger versus mature woodlands in terms of their respective rates of carbon sequestration. The Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is a prime property to use in investigating their arguments as well as other areas\, including Look Park and Smith College’s Lyman Estate. This presentation will look at individual trees and wooded areas\, primarily in Northampton\, and evaluate them in terms of their climate mitigation impacts.

SUMMARY:Beavers at Sundown with Brad Timm
DESCRIPTION:Discover the natural history of beavers\, how they alter the landscape and provide habitat for other wildlife on this walk at Fitzgerald Lake. Evening is the ideal time to observe beavers\, and if we’re lucky\, we’ll see them. We’ll meet at the North Farms Road entrance and walk about 3/4 mile searching for signs of beavers. All ages welcome. Binoculars and shoes for wet\, muddy conditions are recommended. The trails also have lots of roots and rocks to step over. Brad Timm is an independent wildlife biologist.

SUMMARY:Insect Tracks and Signs with Charley Eiseman
DESCRIPTION:Insects are extremely specialized in their habits\, and because of this it is often possible to learn which ones are around us just by noticing the characteristic patterns and objects they create as they go about their lives. Participants will search for signs such as egg cases\, cocoons\, webs\, burrows\, droppings\, galls\, leaf mines\, and the various ways insects nibble\, fold\, roll\, and tie leaves.  Learning about insects through studying these signs will give participants a new appreciation for their complexity\, diversity\, and interrelationships with other living things. Charley is a freelance naturalist based in western Massachusetts and conducts plant and wildlife surveys throughout New England. He is the lead author of the field guide Tracks & Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates and writes an insect-themed blog\, “BugTracks.”

SUMMARY:Removal of Water Chestnut from Fitzgerald Lake (Work Event)
DESCRIPTION:Six years ago we implemented a new approach to controlling water chestnut in Fitzgerald Lake called “pull early\, pull often.” In 2017\, we removed roughly 1\,100 lbs. from the lake while in 2022 the yield was down to 140 lbs. Though we are pleased with the results so far\, viable water chestnut seed can persist for up to ten years on the lake bottom so we plan to continue our “pull early\, pull often” approach again this year. We’ll organize crews in late May\, begin pulling in mid-June and continue at 3-week intervals throughout the summer. Volunteers should bring their own canoes or kayaks. If interested\, contact Bob Zimmermann by email (raz@umass.edu) or phone (585-0405) for further information or to volunteer.

SUMMARY:Mushrooms in the Woodland Ecosystem with Peter Russell
DESCRIPTION:Mushrooms are an essential component of our Woodland ecosystems\, yet much of their taxonomy and diversity remains undescribed even in sites such as Fitzgerald Lake.  A lot of such recording is nowadays performed by citizen scientists and amateurs.  Take a walk in the woods to learn about this diversity\, how to recognize some of the major groups of fungi\, and the roles played by mushrooms in the Woodland ecosystem. Collecting edible mushrooms will not be the main focus of this walk.  Peter is a local resident\, a member of the Pioneer Valley Mycological Society\, and has been leading mushroom forays for many years. \nBBC will not be limiting attendance\, but we ask that you register for each walk beforehand. This will allow us to answer any questions you might have and notify you of any changes or cancellations. \nTo sign up for any of the following walks\, please send an email to Dave Pritchard at Registrar.BroadBrookCoalition@gmail.com. For more information on this program call Dave Pritchard (413-268-3668) or Dick Wynne (413-584-7930).
